Frequently Asked Questions

You got questions, we've got answers.

Product and Practice

Are your cattle grain-finished?

No, our cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished. They graze on diverse pastures throughout their lives, which contributes to the high nutritional value and superior flavor of our beef. We never supplement their diet with grain or any other feed that is not natural to their environment.

What is the difference between being certified organic and your farming methods?

While we respect the standards set by organic certification, our practices go beyond those requirements. We believe in a holistic approach to farming that supports the health of our animals, the biodiversity of our land, and the nutritional value of our beef. Therefore, we choose not to pursue the organic paper work as we feel it doesn't fully represent the extent of our sustainable farming practices.

Is frozen meat just as good as fresh meat?

Yes, absolutely! Our meat is flash-frozen at peak freshness to lock in all the nutrients and flavor. This process ensures you receive the highest quality product, regardless of when you choose to cook and enjoy it.

Do you vaccinate your animals with the mRNA vaccine?

No, we have never used the mRNA vaccine on our animals and we never will. We believe in keeping our cattle as natural as possible.

Do you use any other vaccines on your cattle?

Our cattle are well adapted to their environment and are hardy, reducing their need for such interventions. We do not use any vaccines on our cattle.

Regenerative Ranching

How does regenerative farming compare to plant-based, industrial organic, and conventional farming methods?

Regenerative agriculture prioritizes restoring and enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function. It includes practices such as rotational grazing, cover cropping, and minimal tillage. Plant-based farming primarily grows crops for human consumption and doesn't necessarily improve soil health or ecosystem functionality. Industrial organic refers to large-scale operations meeting the minimum organic certification requirements, but may not prioritize overall environmental health. Conventional agriculture often uses synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which can lead to soil degradation and reduced biodiversity.

Can regenerative meat production help in fighting climate change?

Yes, regenerative farming can aid in combating climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil. Healthy soils, managed well, can absorb and store carbon, acting as a natural carbon sink and offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production.

Is it feasible to sustain a growing population with grass-fed animal protein? Is this method scalable?

Regenerative ranching practices can enhance land productivity over time, allowing more animals to be raised on the same land area. However, relying on grass-fed animal protein to feed a growing population also demands changes in dietary habits and reductions in food waste.

Aren't cows contributing to climate change by releasing methane?

While cows do produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, through their digestive process, this is part of a natural cycle in a regenerative system. The grass cows consume absorbs carbon dioxide during growth, some of which returns to the soil. Healthy soils can also absorb methane, helping to balance out the emissions from the cows.

Isn't the water consumption too high for producing animal protein?

All food production requires water. Yet, in a well-managed regenerative system, water usage can be efficient. Animals eat grasses typically fed by rain and don't require extra irrigation. Moreover, healthy soils retain water better, reducing the need for additional watering.

Do we have sufficient land for cattle grazing?

Yes, enough land is available for cattle grazing, especially with regenerative practices that boost land productivity. Much of the global agricultural land is unsuitable for crop growth but can support grazing animals. By integrating livestock into crop systems, like grazing animals on cover crops or crop residues, agricultural land use can be more efficient.

Ordering & Delivery

Where does Five Mile Beef deliver?

We deliver all over the country. All orders outside of our local market (Southern Utah) will receive their orders within 1-2 days of placing their order.

Who will deliver my order?

Our dedicated ranch hands take pride in personally delivering your order, ensuring a touch of our ranch's commitment lands directly in your hands. While we offer 24/7 customer support via email (support@thefivemilebeef.com) or phone (435.274.BEEF), the moment of delivery is a perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions you have. Transparency is at the heart of what we do, and we're always here to provide clear, honest answers.

When will my credit card be charged?

Your card will be charged only when your order is prepared for delivery, not at the moment of order placement. Due to the nature of items priced by the pound, you may notice a slight variance in the final order total compared to your estimated total. Such adjustments ensure accuracy and fairness in billing, reflecting the exact weight of your selections. Bundle prices do not change, only if orders include a la carte items. Bundles are a set price.

When will my order be delivered?

Our daily deliveries are typically delivered by 5PM when you place your order by noon, with the specific timing for each order shared with you so you can plan accordingly. All orders outside of our local market of Southern Utah should expect their order on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on when the order was placed and whether or not your location requires 1 or 2 day shipping. Like local orders, you will be sent tracking information to track the details of your order.

How should I expect my order to arrive?

Each order is carefully packed in 12x12x12 boxes to ensure the utmost care and quality. Inside, you'll find your beef vacuum-sealed, a method chosen to guarantee freshness and extend shelf life. Expect one box for every 25 lbs. of beef ordered. For instance, ordering a quarter beef, approximately 90 lbs., means your order will be organized into about four boxes, each packed with precision and attention to detail.

What is the Cost for Same Day, 1-Day, and 2-Day Shipping?

We are proud to offer same-day delivery to bring our responsibly-raised, grass-fed beef directly from our ranch to your table.
